How to Optimize Plex for 4K HDR Content

4K HDR content looks spectacular -- when it plays correctly. But 4K HDR on Plex is also the single most common source of buffering, washed-out colors, and server meltdowns. The core problem is simple: transcoding 4K HDR content is brutally expensive, and most of the time it destroys the HDR metadata in the process, producing a dull, gray image. The solution is to avoid transcoding 4K HDR entirely. This guide explains how.
Why Direct Play Is Non-Negotiable for 4K HDR
When a Plex client Direct Plays a file, the server sends the raw file as-is. No CPU usage, no re-encoding, no metadata loss. For standard 1080p content, transcoding is an acceptable fallback. For 4K HDR, it is not.
HDR metadata (the brightness mapping information embedded in the video stream) gets stripped during a standard transcode. The result is a flat, washed-out picture that looks worse than a good 1080p encode. Server-side tone mapping can preserve some of the HDR information when downscaling to SDR, but it requires significant GPU resources and the output is still a compromise. The goal should always be Direct Play.
Bandwidth Requirements
4K HDR files are large, and they demand sustained high throughput. Here are typical bitrate ranges for common 4K formats:

A WiFi connection that benchmarks at 200 Mbps may only deliver 60 Mbps of sustained throughput due to interference and contention. HDR Formats Explained
HDR10
The baseline HDR standard. Static metadata that applies a single brightness curve to the entire film. Supported by virtually all 4K-capable clients and TVs. This is the most common HDR format you will encounter.
HDR10+
Samsung's dynamic metadata extension of HDR10. Adjusts brightness on a scene-by-scene or frame-by-frame basis. Limited client support outside Samsung devices. Falls back to HDR10 gracefully on unsupported hardware.
Dolby Vision
Dolby's premium dynamic HDR format. Uses proprietary metadata layers (Profiles 5, 7, and 8 are most relevant for streaming). Profile 5 is the most widely supported on streaming devices. Profile 7 includes a backwards-compatible HDR10 base layer. Client support varies significantly -- check your specific device.
HLG (Hybrid Log-Gamma)
Designed for broadcast TV. HLG is backwards-compatible with SDR displays, meaning it looks acceptable even without HDR processing. Less common in movie files but used in some live content and broadcasts.
Tone Mapping -- The Fallback
When a client cannot handle HDR but you want to play a 4K HDR file, Plex can perform server-side tone mapping. This converts the HDR color space to SDR while attempting to preserve the visual intent of the grading. Plex supports hardware-accelerated tone mapping via Intel Quick Sync (10th generation and newer) and NVIDIA NVENC (GTX 1050 and newer with Plex Pass).
Tone mapping is computationally expensive. A single 4K HDR-to-SDR transcode with tone mapping will consume significant GPU resources. It is a valid fallback for occasional use, but if you find yourself tone mapping regularly, the better solution is to maintain separate 4K and 1080p copies of your content.
The Separate Library Strategy
The most reliable approach for mixed-capability households is to maintain two separate libraries: one for 4K HDR content and one for 1080p SDR content. This avoids a scenario where a phone user browsing your library accidentally triggers a 4K transcode that bogs down the entire server.
How to Set It Up
- Create a folder structure like
/media/movies-4k/and/media/movies/. - In Plex, create two separate Movie libraries: "Movies" pointing to the 1080p folder and "Movies (4K)" pointing to the 4K folder.
- For users with 4K-capable clients, share both libraries. For users on phones, tablets, or web browsers, share only the 1080p library.
This strategy ensures that 4K content is only served to clients that can Direct Play it. It doubles your storage requirements for titles you keep in both formats, but it eliminates transcoding problems entirely.
Server Settings to Lock In
- Disable "Allow Transcoding" for 4K library (optional). Under the library's sharing settings for each user, you can restrict transcoding. This prevents accidental transcodes but also means the content simply will not play on unsupported clients.
- Set remote quality limits. If your upload speed cannot sustain 80+ Mbps for a 4K remux, cap remote streaming quality or disable remote access for the 4K library.
