How to Manage Plex Bandwidth -- Stream Limits and Quality Control
Bandwidth is the invisible constraint that governs your Plex experience. A single 4K HDR stream can consume 80 Mbps or more, while a 1080p transcode might use 8 to 12 Mbps. If you share your server with multiple users streaming simultaneously, bandwidth demands stack up quickly. Without management, a few concurrent streams can saturate your internet upload, causing buffering for everyone -- including you and your household's non-Plex internet usage.

Understanding Plex Bandwidth Usage
Before configuring limits, it helps to understand how much bandwidth different stream types actually consume.
Direct Play and Direct Stream
When a client Direct Plays or Direct Streams a file, the bandwidth consumed equals the bitrate of the media file. There is no compression or transcoding -- the file is sent as-is. Common bitrates:

Transcoded Streams
When Plex transcodes a stream, the output bitrate is determined by the quality setting chosen by the server or client. Common transcode output bitrates:

- Maximum (20 Mbps): High quality 1080p transcode
- 10 Mbps: Good quality 1080p
- 4 Mbps: Acceptable 720p

Transcoding reduces bandwidth consumption compared to Direct Play of high-bitrate files, but it costs CPU power on the server.
Server-Side Bandwidth Settings
Plex provides several server-level settings that control bandwidth usage for all users.
Total Bandwidth Limit
In Settings, Network, find "Limit remote stream bitrate." This sets a maximum bitrate for each individual remote stream. If you set it to 8 Mbps, no remote user can stream above 8 Mbps regardless of their client settings. Plex will transcode down to the limit if necessary.
This is the most effective single control for managing upload bandwidth. Calculate your maximum based on your internet upload speed:
Per-stream limit = (Upload speed * 0.8) / Max concurrent remote streams
The 0.8 factor reserves 20 percent of your upload for non-Plex traffic (web browsing, video calls, other services). If you have 50 Mbps upload and want to support 4 concurrent remote streams:
(50 * 0.8) / 4 = 10 Mbps per stream
LAN Bandwidth
Local network (LAN) streams are typically not bandwidth-constrained because modern home networks operate at 1 Gbps (gigabit Ethernet) or at least 300 Mbps (WiFi). Plex's default setting allows LAN streams to play at original quality without any bitrate limit, which is the correct configuration for most users.
If your local network is congested (many devices on a slow WiFi access point), you can set a LAN bandwidth limit, but the better solution is to improve your local network infrastructure -- a wired Ethernet connection to your streaming device eliminates local bandwidth as a concern entirely.
Per-User Bandwidth Restrictions
Plex allows you to set bandwidth limits on a per-user basis when sharing your library. When you manage a shared user's settings, you can restrict:
- Remote streaming quality: Set a maximum quality level for remote streams. Options range from Original to 720 Kbps (0.7 Mbps).
- Home streaming quality: Set a maximum quality for local network streams (usually left at Original).
To configure per-user limits, go to Settings, Users and Sharing, click on a shared user, and adjust the "Restrictions" section. These limits override whatever the user sets in their Plex client -- if you limit a user to 4 Mbps, they cannot override it to Original quality even if their client requests it.
This is particularly useful for managing bandwidth across many shared users. You might give your household members Original quality (since they are on the LAN) while limiting remote friends to 8 or 10 Mbps.
LAN vs. WAN Detection
Plex differentiates between local (LAN) and remote (WAN) connections to apply different bandwidth policies. By default, Plex considers connections from your local subnet as LAN and everything else as WAN. You can customize this in Settings, Network:
- "LAN Networks": Enter additional subnets that should be treated as local. This is useful if you have multiple VLANs, a VPN, or a complex network topology. For example, adding
10.0.0.0/8would treat any device on a 10.x.x.x address as a LAN connection. - "Treat WAN IP as LAN bandwidth": If your LAN has a public IP range (uncommon in home networks but possible in some setups), this setting ensures those connections get LAN treatment.
Correct LAN detection matters because it determines whether the local or remote quality limit applies. If Plex incorrectly treats a LAN connection as remote, users on your local network may get unnecessarily transcoded streams.
Client-Side Quality Settings
Users can set their preferred streaming quality in their Plex client app. These settings determine what the client requests from the server, subject to any server-side limits:
- Remote streaming quality: How much bandwidth to use when streaming remotely. Setting this lower reduces buffering on slow connections.
- Home streaming quality: Quality for local network streams. Should generally be set to Maximum or Original.
- Automatically adjust quality: Some Plex clients can dynamically adjust quality based on current network conditions. This reduces buffering but can cause quality fluctuations during playback.
Educate your shared users about these settings. Many buffering complaints can be resolved by having the user lower their remote streaming quality to match their actual internet download speed rather than leaving it at Maximum.
Reducing Transcoding to Save Bandwidth
Transcoding and bandwidth are closely related. When Plex transcodes, it is usually to reduce the bitrate (and thus bandwidth) of a stream. But transcoding also consumes server CPU. Here are strategies to minimize both:
Optimize Media Files
If your library contains many high-bitrate files (remuxes, uncompressed rips), consider creating optimized versions. Use Compatible Formats
Direct Play eliminates the need for transcoding entirely. Most modern streaming devices support H.264 in MP4 containers with AAC or AC3 audio. If you encode or acquire media in this format, most clients will Direct Play without any transcoding or bandwidth reduction.
Match Client Capabilities
Different clients have different codec support. The Plex Web player, for instance, cannot play H.265 (HEVC) natively in most browsers, forcing a transcode. Native apps on Apple TV, Roku, and Fire TV handle HEVC well. Know your users' devices and optimize your library format accordingly.
Upload Speed Requirements
Your internet upload speed is the ultimate limit on remote streaming quality. Here are minimum upload speed recommendations:
